My experience with Eastern European let alone Ukrainian death metal is severely lacking. I’ve said it a hundred times before and will continue to shout about how death metal rarely appeals to me. The brand is overrated and often generic. This is where bands like No Emotions come in to the fray and paint an entirely new picture for me to analyse and interpret. Although my experience, as stated, my be lacking I do however know of a number of death metal bands who, in my eyes, are flying the flag for the scene in a general sense of the word. Bands like the legendary Bolt Thrower, or even Death are central figures in portraying this overly aggressive genre of metal. There are even times when No Emotions even take on traits of the aforementioned bands, which will appeal to many people. The modern day scene, particularly in countries like the Czech Republic, from what I’ve heard, is thriving. So perhaps I shouldn’t be so surprised to hear about this band, No Emotions, a Ukrainian act, spewing their belligerent, combative and hostile splice of death metal across the world.

To me, death metal conjures images of the military and connotations of that particular word. The instrumentation that No Emotions portray is built of several layered foundations, primarily based around the often melodic guitars, which act as stronghold on the audience, never allowing them to catch their breath as each individual onslaught comes one after another. Emotionally draining, perhaps, but ’No Will’ isn’t about stirring emotions of beauty or sorrow, like black metal or even doom metal often does. Although the lyrical themes don’t appear to involve the military, there is something about the instrumentation, particularly the percussion, that reminds me of never ending militant attacks on the audience members individual body. This is down to the solid song writing implemented by the bands musicians, who are evidently very talented and possess the ability to embrace the melodic side of death metal, whilst keeping the compositions impressively raw and on edge. Like bands like Bolt Thrower, or even Intestine Baalism do, No Emotions employ melody alongside crunching layered riffs, this gives the soundscapes more depth and allows for more expression in other ways.

The pounding percussion acts like as pre-emptive strikes upon the tortured soul of the listener, who’s body is dismembered by the shredding guitars riffs which sound intense, impacting and suspenseful. The combination play is what makes this record, ‘My Will’ so effective. The impact that the guitars have upon the atmospheres which, as touched upon already, are often melodic in sound, is what truly sets this record apart from the majority of death metal records. Although I would have liked more from the bass department, which is often left behind like a fallen man in the heat of battle, the other elements of instrumentation are solid enough to allow my opinion to waver the lack of influence the bass has upon the creeping barrage effect that the soundscapes have. The vocals are deep growls, which enhances that crunching feeling that the instrumentation slaps on to the back of the listener, weighing them down like heavy armour. The major disappointment is, of course, the short nature of this record. At just under half an hour long, No Emotions serve up a quick assault before they head into the unknown. This leaves the audience feeling disappointed and wanting more, which is a good thing in retrospect. ‘My Will’ holds promise hostage in this short assault on the sense. More please!
