Stev Schumann (vocals, guitar) and Marcel Hinkel (synths) follow their debut CDEP, First Cadence, with Last Years Calling. An instrumental ´Intro´ is followed by 10 songs in English and German. The combination of folk-style vocals, acoustic guitar, restrained synthesiser accompaniment and SFX makes this absolutely classic neofolk/gothic-industrial in the style pioneered by Sol Invictus, Death In June and Current 93 and you will find echoes of all these here as well as elements shared by second-generation projects like Ostara, and even a touch of Laibach.

´Of the golden future time´ - a hymn to a struggle for liberation - is the most apocalyptic number and reminds me of Changes. ´Human´ features strummed acoustic guitar, croakily whispered vocals and passages of trumpet music in early-DIJ style, while ´Courage´ features more conventional singing, a plucked acoustic guitar and synth.

The fact that the English vocals are heavily German-accented will be very obvious to British and American listeners. On ´Bloody´, an interesting and vaguely blasphemous song, the English sounds almost South African. ´Von Traum´ is the only track sung in German, and it does sound much more natural. The penultimate track ´Drowning´ is unique on the album in having a very strong synthpop lead-in and hook, but the verses return to neofolk style.

Despite my reservations about the vocals, this album has a good range of melodies and I find it strangely compelling. If only Novalis would make more use of their native German instead of their rather bizarre English.
